EC2
EC2 Right Sizing
The recommendations are consumed from the AWS Cost Management Explorer-Compute Optimizer and then processed by our platform's algorithm.
AWS Logic:
-
Identify EC2 instances using low CPU and recommend to switch the instance type to a more suitable one which will cost less within the same family type.
-
The recommendation algorithm will examine your memory utilization if you will enable your AWS CloudWatch agent, more details on the required memory metrics can be found here.
Once the Memory is enabled it will be shown in the waste detector as well in the table and as a graph.
Umbrella Logic:
-
Evaluates usage over the past 21 days (according to the defined preferences). A resource qualifies if its maximum CPU utilization was below the specified threshold (default: 80%) and the potential savings exceed 5% of the AWS cost.
-
Reviews all additional preferences as well.
In cases where the EC2 instance does not exist in the invoice the recommendation consumed from AWS will be filtered out.
Umbrella Savings Algorithm basing on Hourly Usage:
When calculating cloud cost savings, we base our analysis on the actual hourly usage of each instance. This approach ensures that savings are accurately aligned with the precise consumption patterns of your infrastructure.
For example:
If an instance runs for 10 hours in a day, only those 10 hours are factored into the cost savings calculation, rather than the full-day cost.
This allows us to identify potential savings by considering factors such as underutilized instances, reserved instance commitments based on actual runtime.
By using this method, we provide a more detailed and actionable view of your cost savings opportunities, reflecting real-world usage rather than static, time-independent estimates.
The following preferences should be qualified in order to be taken into account for the recommendation.
-
Days To Check: Resource should be at least “days to check” old (example: Do not check resources that were launched in the last 14 days). (Default= 30)
-
Activity Period:The resource’s Minimum Active Days should be evaluated within this period (Example: Check resources activity in the last two months)(Default=14)
-
Min Active Days:The minimum cumulative number of active days for the resource within the Activity Period, not consecutive (Example: Only recommend on servers running at least 15 days in the period). (Default= 10)
-
Max CPU Utilization: The maximal CPU utilization measured in the checked period. (Default= 80%).

EC2 Generation Upgrade
This recommendation suggest using latest generation of instances to get the best performance and pricing.
Validate that the instance exist for at least 3 days, (Days from creation preferences) and trigger recommendation in case the potintial saving is higher then 5$ (not taking into account eh IP cost).

- Exclude Graviton, the recommended instance type should not include graviton instance types as part of the alternatives.
- Same Physical Processor only, the recommended instance type alternatives should have the same processor as the current instance type, default is disable.
- Same Storage type only, the recommended instance type alternatives should have the same storage type as the current instance type, default is enable.
- Allow Lower Network Performance, the recommended instance type alternatives should have the same or higher NW performance characteristics as in the current instance type, default is disable.
- Min Creation Days, the minimum days for the instance to exist with this version, default 3 days.
Umbrella.
Yes.
Since we cant access AWS using APIs we rely on the invoice only, hence the recommendation has different behaviour:
- Recommend the newest generation based on the vCPU and Memory of the current instance from the CUR.
- We compare the extracted instance type vCPU and Memory to the pricing page and recommend upgrading based on cost.
- The alternative present data that existing in the CUR and Pricing.
- Preference are applicable also for GovCloud.
EC2 Idle
This recommendation identifies Idle EC2 instances which can be stopped or deleted.
Identifying EC2 instances that have a low CPU. Low CPU is defined as daily average CPU utilization < 1%. The period to check is the last 30 days.

Native + Umbrella validation.
No.
Stopped EC2 instance
This recommendation identifies EC2 instances that are stopped but still carry additional EBS and/or Public IP charges. This is being checked for instances that are stopped for 7 days and more. (subject to preferences).
Identify EC2 instances that are stopped but still carry additional EBS and/or Public IP charges. this is being checked for instances that are stopped for 7 days and more. (subject to preferences).
Savings Calculation
The calculation takes into account the following:
- Minimum monthly potintal saving > 5$ (subject to preferences), the minimum cost doesn't consider the public_ip_address_cost= 3.5 if exist.
- EC2 running hours
- EBS storage attached root and data volumes
- Elastic IPs (if associated but not attached)
- Snapshots or AMIs
- Provisioned IOPS in these cases:
- The instance uses io1 or io2 volumes (Provisioned IOPS SSD)
- The instance uses gp3 volumes with provisioned IOPS beyond the default (3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s)
-These volumes remain attached to the stopped instance and are not deleted
- Least Stopped Days, default 7 days.
- Min Potintial Savings, monthly potintal saving as a threshold, default 5$.

EC2 Unnecessary Data Transfer
This recommendation identifies AWS charges for inter-Availability Zones data transfer between Amazon EC2 instances within the same region. We identify resources that have inter-Availability Zones Data Transfer and suggest to co-locate it within the same Availability Zone to avoid unnecessary data transfer charges.
